With all the talk about the "Making Home Affordable" program, and with all the layoffs and pay cuts that Americans are facing today, it's tempting to ask for a loan modification even if you are able, somehow, to meet your mortgage payment.

Before you decide to make that move, decide whether you're going to need high credit scores in the near future.

Under reporting guidelines set forth by the credit bureaus and the Consumer Data Industry Association, your loan modification will be reported as a "Partial Payment Plan." Under the FICO scoring method, that designation will lower your credit scores, even if you have never missed a payment.

Consumer advocates argue that this designation is an unfair penalty imposed on consumers. The lender has not reduced the principal balance, nor has it reduced the interest rate permanently. Loan modification is merely a temporary interest rate reduction - no different from a promotional or temporary rate offered by a credit card issuer.

For now, however, the reporting designation will stand.

Because loan modification is a relatively new solution to excess debt, FICO doesn't have sufficient information to determine whether it should or should not reduce scores. Right now they simply don't know if a person who seeks loan modification is a higher credit risk than anyone else.

Those in favor of the designation insist that loan modification is nothing more than a band aid. They say consumers are merely postponing the inevitable and that those loans will be in default within 6 months.

Either side could be correct, but only time and information gathering will reveal the truth.

Thus, if you feel that you'll need high scores within the next couple of years, it would be best to struggle along with your current payment. It is difficult to see those around you getting a financial break while you keep on paying, but remember that they are simply paying with a different currency - their FICO scores.

Another option for homeowners who find themselves upside down in a mortgage but who want to keep their homes is to seek a short refinance. A short refinance is a refinance with the same lender, but with a portion of the principal balance forgiven.

This option will, of course, damage your credit scores even more because it will be reported as a settlement or a charge off. But if you love your home and want to keep it, the trade off for lowered credit scores could be worth it.

The need of a resistor in an LED is to limit the current in the LED to a safe value. LEDs are semiconductors or diodes in particular. The current flowing in an LED is an exponential function of voltage across the LED. As a result what happens is that a small change in voltage can produce a huge change in current. That is the most important concept of why resistors are used in LEDs. Resistors have specific properties. The current and voltage in a resistor are linearly related. That means that a change in voltage will produce a proportional change in current. Current versus voltage is a straight line for a resistor but not at all for an LED. Because of this, you can’t say that LEDs have resistance. Resistance is defined as the constant ratio of voltage to current in a resistive circuit element. Even worse, there is no real way to figure out exactly the relationship between current and voltage for any given LED across all possible voltages other than direct measurement. The exact relationship varies among different colors, different sizes, and even different batches from the same manufacturer. When you buy an LED, it should come with a rating. That rating will look like something 5.5V @ 20 mA. That gives you a general point on the operating curve. This is normally a safe operating point. In addition you may get a maximum rating. Which can be in the form of either a voltage or current . For example, a lot of people report buying 5V blue LEDs. These are really not rated to operate continuously at 5V in most cases. So the approach that one should  prefer is to select a current-limiting resistor in order to achieve a target current in the LED. Most 3mm and 5mm LEDs will operate close to their peak brightness at a drive current of 20 mA. This is a conservative current it will not exceed most ratings ,your specs may vary, or you may not have any specs, in this case 20 mA is a good default guess. In most cases, driving the LED at a higher current will not produce substantial additional light. Instead, the junction which is the working parts of the LED has to dissipate the excess power as heat. Heating the junction will decrease its useful life, and can reduce the output of the LED substantially. Heating it enough will cause catastrophic failure producing a dark emitting diode. All these factors explain how and why LEDs require resistors for proper working.

Fred Mills, Music professor, was a trumpeter for 24 years with the Canadian Brass quintet.  He also performed with several orchestras.  The Canada native performed around the globe as a trumpeter.  He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Before he graduated he got his first job offer.

He was a founding member of The American Symphony Orchestra in New York. He was also invited to join the Houston Symphony Orchestra in Texas as principal trumpet.  Along with the Canadian Brass, Mr. Mills recorded more than 40 albums.  He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1992.  Mills joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 1996.

Jacory Harris

Setting Up a Video Production Studio

If you want to make a lot of videos, setting up a simple video studio might be the most cost effective way to go about it.

Making video in a studio is easier, faster, and therefore a lot less expensive than making video using field production method.

Why? A studio is more permanent, so you don't have to take the time to set-up and tear down the equipment every time. More importantly, a studio production is edited live, which saves HOURS of post-production editing time.

Here is some advice and a list of the equipment you would need to set up a basic TV production studio.

A typical TV studio has three cameras on tripods with dollys (wheels) for easy maneuverability. With a good director and decent camera operators, three cameras could be made to look like one-hundred, so you do not really need more than three.

All three cameras are hooked into a machine called a video switcher. (Today you can get computers that operate like video switchers and also include graphics generators, but for the purpose of this article, I will just use the term video switcher.)

The video switcher is used to switch between cameras and edit your production live. This is the main reason why studio production is so much faster than field production. In field production, you use one camera and edit it later. Post production editing is extremely time consuming. At a professional level, edit time is estimated at one hour per finished MINUTE. That's sixty hours of edit time for a sixty-minute show. On the other hand, an hour-long studio program is finished at the end of the hour-long taping session.

Any and all equipment that creates anything visual is hooked into the switcher, not just the cameras. So if you have a graphics generator, a video tape machine or DVD player, or a special effects generator it also gets plugged into the switcher.

The director then adds and removes whatever video elements she wants, when she wants, using the switcher. Think of it as functioning like a router. This method is also called instantaneous editing.

A DVD player or videotape player is used to run video clips during the show. Next time you are watching the news and they switch from the anchor person to video of the crime scene, that crime scene video is a pre-edited video being played on a separate player.

Audio is handled much the same way as video. You have an audio switcher, which is usually called an audio mixer or audio board. All microphones, all music/sound effects generators, all audio sources of any kind are plugged into the audio mixer. The audio engineer mixes, adds and removes whichever audio source is appropriate at the appropriate time.
The output of both the video switcher and the audio mixer are then plugged into whatever device you are using to record your finished show.

If you've ever noticed the shots of the control room they use frequently in news programs before a commercial, it has an entire wall of monitors. That's not just to look cool. Each video source needs its own monitor so the director can see what the video source looks like before he punches it up.

A video studio usually has lights mounted on the ceiling, hanging off a metal grid. If you are setting up in a house this might not be feasible. However you can get small, simple ceiling mounts that do not require a grid. Or you can use lights on a stand, same as you would out in the field. They take up a bit of room, but sometimes it is the only way.
If you do have a ceiling grid, make sure you have electrical outlets on the ceiling too. You do not want light cables snaking all over the floor.

The control room, which is where the video and audio switchers are located, should be as sound-proof as possible. The people working in the control room need to have the freedom to talk to each other without being picked up on the microphones being used in the studio.

For control room to studio communication, a head-set system is used. Everybody wears one so the people in the control room can speak to the crew in the studio. The studio crew usually has to come up with some kind of "puff code" or "tap code" so they can answer back without actually making any real noise.

In summary, here is a list of the standard equipment needed for a TV production studio:

• Multiple cameras
• Tripods with dollys for each camera
• Multiple microphones
• Video switcher
• Audio switcher
• Graphics generator
• Lights
• Light mounts
• CD player
• DVD player (or videotape player)
• Cables
• Head set communication system
• Monitors for each video source

Once you have your studio set up, you can crank out polished, professional looking videos quite easily. If you are planning on making LOTS of videos, going to the trouble and expense of setting up a studio can definitely pay off in the long run.
