Fred Mills, Music professor, was a trumpeter for 24 years with the Canadian Brass quintet. He also performed with several orchestras. The Canada native performed around the globe as a trumpeter. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Before he graduated he got his first job offer.
He was a founding member of The American Symphony Orchestra in New York. He was also invited to join the Houston Symphony Orchestra in Texas as principal trumpet. Along with the Canadian Brass, Mr. Mills recorded more than 40 albums. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1992. Mills joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 1996.

With a cornet purchased from a traveling salesman, he began his brass studies. For 6 years he was principal trumpeter with the New York City Opera, he returned to Canada in 1968 where he played with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa.Â
Reviews give him credit for bringing a reputation to the piccolo trumpet. When he began playing it was considered an accessory instrument. Now you won't see an orchestra or ensemble without one. Arrangements of his that are still heard around the world are a Bach Fugue in C Minor and Vivaldi's spring. He had recordings with Sony, Phillips, BMG and RCA. Along with the Canadian Brass he made appearances on CBC and other networks.
